Germany (July 2002)

Haldensleben: The small depot of the former private line Neuhaldensleben - Weferlingen came under the management of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1949. It kept it's status as an independent depot until the 90s. This is remarkable because the depot had just a small shed with no turntable and many other depots, larger than this, were changed into sub-depots already in the 60s.

The rolling stock was very low every time - never more than 30 locomotives. Once the depot became famous as a last resort of Badenian class VI c (DRG-class 75, 2-6-2T) and after-war-class 83.10 (2-8-4T), but class 52 was dominating for the last ten years. The last steam services to Weferlingen and Magdeburg ended in spring of 1988.

In summer of 1987 two engines of class 52 were still in service. 52.8147-2 at Haldensleben station.   A little later leaving Haldensleben with a freight train to Eilsleben...

Two hours later 52.8173-8 is arriving from Weferlingen.   52.8173-8 with a short freight train to Weferlingen leaving Haldensleben.
