Germany (October 2004)Bad Doberan - Kuehlungsborn The last narrow-gauge railway of Mecklenburg is connecting the small city of Bad Doberan with Kuehlungsborn at the Baltic Sea. There are some interesting characteristics which are making the line remarkable: First of all the quite unusual gauge of 900 mm and the large maximum speed of 50 km/h. The rolling stock of the line is remarkable too: 3 locomotive of DRG-class 99.32 (2-8-2T) made by Orenstein & Koppel in 1932 and 2 engines of class 99.33 (0-8-0T) made by LKM Babelsberg in 1959 are in service here. The 0-8-0T's came here from the uranium mining industry of the former Soviet-German corporation (SDAG Wismut) in 1959.
Situated in a typical tourist region the line offers one train per hour in summer season. The trains are starting at the same time from both ends and are crossing on the station Heiligendamm in the middle of the line. The car material is based at Doberan, while the depot for the locomotives is at Kuehlungsborn Western station. A special highlight of the line: the first kilometres crossing the city of Doberan like a tram.
