Wittenberge: In spring of 1987 the end of steam in Wittenberge was not far: The electrification had reached the station. All tracks were still under wires, but still not in use. Wittenberge had just one steam locomotive in service, two other at Perleberg and Wittstock. The big depot was forbidden area because of the transit status. These facts and the bad railway connection from my hometown Eberswalde were reasons for the less photos in my collection.

My first try to get there was failed because of a delayed train in Berlin. The next try two weeks later was successful, but the weather was absolutely bad - it was raining the whole day! With photos of just 3 operating steam locomotives and wet down to the bones I went back home in the afternoon - a really frustrating experience! Because of the low results I never tried to get to Wittenberge again.

This is the way it had to be: Not 50.3610-8 but 50.3680-1 at the same place one year before...   50.3638-9 with a freigt train from Perleberg.

A Salzwedel-based engine: 50.3652-0 came here with a freight train...   ...and went back to Salzwedel with passenger 17324.
Looks more dangerous than it was: The electrification was not finished then the heating-man of 50.3638-9 was turning on the tender on 05.04.1987! Some days later and he would be killed by trying this...
