Cuba (March 2001)

In times of cold and wet winters nothings better than sun, beach and cocktails: Let's go to Cuba!

Cuba is a paradies: Endless sun, white sands, beautiful riffs - and of course - steam locomotives! Every year in January, then the sugar saison is starting, steam awakes all over the land. More than 50 steam locomotives, mostly built in the USA but also in Germany, can be observed in use. All engines are oil-fired, because Cuba has no own coal.

Some of the most interesting sugar mills are presented here. They are numbered from west to east - thats the reason for the numbers at the names

315-José Smith Comas: ...is situated 25 kilometers east of Varadero and one of the most popular mills. All engines are in good condition. Remarkable is one of the less tender-locomotives in Cuba...
