Burma (Myanmar) (February 2002)

Insein: Burma Railways only repair-shop is situated in the suburb Insein of the capital Rangoon (Yangon). Dominated by diesel the shop has only a small area for steam-overhaul. Two main repairs are estimated per year. That means a stock of round-about 20 serviceable steam locomotives at all. There is also a number of small repairs every year, so it's no wonder why I met 5 engines under repair on 15th February 2002.

The scrap-collection is also remarkable. A large number of YB, YC, YD and ST is dumped outside of the shed. The most interesting one is GC-837, the only Garrat-locomotive, freshly painted as a monument...

Bago's YD-967 is waiting for the axles.   YD-964

Frame of an unknown class YC.   YD-974 is ready for transfer home.

ST-753 is one engine of Burma's standard-class ST.   Garrat GC-837 stands outside as a monument.

Waiting for better times: YB-534 ...   ... and YB-532 outside of the shed.
View into the shed: YD-967 and the frames of ST-759 (middle) and an unknown class YC...
