Poland (2009)

Zagan (Sagan) was one of the less Polish steam depots surviving until the early 90s. The last steam services came to an end in spring of 1991 when class Ol49 was taken out of service. The class Ty2 (DRB 52) already had to quit one year before, class Pt47 already in 1988. A peculiarity were the border-crossing steam services to Forst (Germany) until 1991.

Unfortunately steam service were very unreliable in the last years, because steam engines were only driven by elder drivers without any diesel-licence. With the on-going retirement of these drivers and firemen steam services melted down to zero. So I had no luck with my visits and never took a picture of driving steam train here. Only some pictures in the depot area were possible. The last active steam engine was Ty2-1086 (ex. Wolsztyn), heating the depot in winter 1994/1995.

The last indian: Ty2-1086 on it's way to the coaling point (winter 1995).   Preserved: Prussian class P8 (Ok1-198) in the depot.

Ty2-1275 waits at Forst station for the start back home.   One of the last Zagan' steam trains is waiting at the platform in Forst in April 1991.

Ty2-924 is shunting at Lubsko.   Ol49-68 near Tuplice. The very good condition of the engine is remarkable.

Ol49-63 at Zary. At the lamp on the platform the feared sign "photos permitted".   Ol49-63 with a powerful start at Lipinki Luzycki.
